Challenge: Transform the cave-like character of the original residence into an open and day-lit environment with multiple outdoor views. Add a new master suite with a home office.
Concepts: The dining area was widened into a day-lit hub where spaces and activities overlap, opening horizontally to the kitchen, living-room and yard, as well as vertically to the master suite above. Existing modernist cues were reinforced via a minimalist vocabulary of clean lines and exposed structure. Tall transom windows afforded by the master suite upward-sweeping roof eaves, provide optimal second-floor views and daylighting.
