Challenge: Convert the ground floor into a semi-independent, wheel-chair accessible flat for the owner’s aging parents. Expand and remodel the kitchen and dining room. Add an elevator to make the 3-story hillside residence fully accessible.
Concepts: The new kitchen’s exterior walls were designed to express a simple cubist form, cantilevered beyond the building perimeter. A roof terrace above is perched among the surrounding conifers. The elevator shaft was added outside the original building footprint, simplifying construction and providing easy access from the ground floor entry and garage to the floors above.
