East 21st. Ave Residence
Challenge: Replace the former residence with a modern bungalow-style residence, with direct links to the surrounding garden.
Concepts: The compact 2-story residence combines the proportions and detailing of a historic bungalow with the openness and spatial continuity of a contemporary open-plan design. All public interior areas are inter-connected, allowing views to the garden which surrounds the house on all four sides. The kitchen is glazed on 3 sides, and opens directly onto the garden patio. The steep main roof with its shed dormers maintains a comfortable exterior scale, while the living-room sitting niche, entry porches and stairway landing are conceived as bays protruding past the main building walls.
Sustainable Strategies: Daylighting; shading devices; improved insulation; infrastructure for future solar panels. see more
