Challenge: Design a modernist studio in the back yard of an existing hillside residence.
Concepts: The studio is sited among tall firs uphill from the existing residence. Its shed roof lifts westward over high transom windows allowing tall storage areas, ample daylight, and views of sky and trees. The deep roof overhangs shelter the entries, a deck, and storage racks. The flexible interiors are comprised of a large multi-purpose room and a small adjoining room, allowing future conversion of the current shop and office into a small residence. The bathroom features a dry sauna, and a hot tub sits in the terraced garden between the two buildings.
